Lam Research today announced that it has teamed up with Water Watch Penang to launch ‘Projek Air Hijau’, a collaborative initiative aimed at promoting water conservation and sustainability across various schools in Penang.

‘Projek Air Hijau’ is designed to educate students and teachers about the critical importance of water conservation and empower them with the infrastructure to contribute to water conservation. The project is currently implemented across eight schools in Penang, and it’s estimated to conserve 500,000 liters (132,086 gallons) of water annually through the installation of sustainable water systems to harvest rainwater and condensate from air conditioners. These systems will reduce dependency on treated water by at least 5% for non-potable purposes.

The Lam team also unveiled an addition to their existing rainwater harvesting system, a move that supports Lam's global objective of achieving 80 million gallons of water savings in water-stressed regions by year-end from a 2019 baseline. In 2024, Lam's Batu Kawan facility successfully conserved eight million liters of water through rainwater harvesting.

"Penang's journey towards water security is a shared responsibility. We commend Lam Research and Water Watch Penang for their exemplary commitment to water conservation. Such proactive initiatives from the industry and NGOs are vital in mitigating water stress and ensuring a sustainable future for our state's invaluable resources," said Dato’ Ir. Pathmanathan K., CEO of Perbadanan Bekalan Air Pulau Pinang (PBAPP) and PBA Holdings Bhd. (PBAHB).

"Lam Research is committed to environmental sustainability and constantly seeks ways to conserve natural resources within our operations. Given the water stress in our region, we are pleased to collaborate with Water Watch Penang to expand our water conservation efforts to the community," stated EK Lee, General Manager of Lam Manufacturing Malaysia.

Reinforcing its commitment to community engagement, Lam employee volunteers are working with Water Watch Penang to develop innovative water conservation digital games and content to engage and educate students on the critical subject of responsible water stewardship.

"Educating the next generation on water conservation is a cornerstone of our mission at Water Watch Penang. For this reason, we are incredibly thrilled to collaborate with Lam Research on 'Projek Air Hijau’ as this will not only help us reduce water consumption across participating schools but, more importantly, inspire and instill a culture of responsible water usage among our youth," shared Prof. Emeritus Dato’ Dr. Chan Ngai Weng, President of Water Watch Penang.
